I always thought this was way cooler than the F-22....and that building them both to physically compete was a crazy waste of tax money (because even the loser would recoup their costs through other contracts).

I hate politician generals

I’ve always had a suspicion that there is version of this aircraft in service and we just don’t know about it. Like that mystery plane that ran off the runway in England and they had to get a C5 to retrieve it in the middle of the night.

Faster than the YF-22, but without thrust vectoring and thus, less maneuverable. Aside from that, I think the AF brass thought that the YF-22 just looked more like a fighter plane.

Faster, but not quite as maneuverable. Didn’t have vectored thrust.

True. Still a good looking beast.

Feeling ok?

Actually, that was a pretty normal thing. The YF-17 (became the F-18) competed with the F-16.

isn’t that an F-52 for Norway?

Absolutely. Feeling better, thanks. My oldest got the bug after me and was ill for 24 hours. Hopefully it ends there.

Suppose you’re correct. Looking at total gunslinger capability it wins. However even the f16 guys will show how the vectored thrust actually is a waste of time and a hinderance. Because if used its for a kill shot in a 1 v 1 scenario and makes that vectored thrust plane slow, without energy, and now a target.

F22 had more stealth and speed but we easily saw speed not win engagements. I doubt well see a real airwar again, at least one with sustained dogfight agression.

My guess is that we are one generation of fighter away from pilotless fighters.
